Meet Willem Butler Professional Actor and Fantasy Alumni
“If someone came to me and asked, ‘How should they get started in theater?’ I would immediately say Fantasy Playhouse. I think it is the perfect introduction into making a show. ”
Willem Butler is a professional actor based in New York City, where he has built a career performing on some of the city's most exciting stages. His journey into theater began in childhood when he discovered Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and Academy (FPCTA), FPCTA quickly became a second home for Willem in his early beginnings into theater. Encouraged by his family, Willem joined Fantasy and became a “Fantasy Kid” alongside his brothers, participating in countless shows that fueled his passion for performance, storytelling, and collaboration. These formative experiences nurtured his natural talent and set him on a lifelong path in the performing arts.
For Willem, FPCTA was much more than a theater, it was a vibrant, inclusive community that welcomed children of all backgrounds and abilities. Willem saw and experienced FPCTA as a place where everyone, regardless of age or experience, can engage in the joy of theater and discover their creative voice. Through his years at FPCTA, he learned the fundamentals of theater that he would carry with him into his career as a professional actor. From how to move on stage, to stage directions, character development, and all the key terminology that he would later find used at all levels of the profession. More importantly, FPCTA taught him the value of community how to work as part of an ensemble. FPCTA helped foster in Willem the abilities to support his friends and peers on stage, and helped in building not just a positive, encouraging environment for Willem but to all the kids, families, and adults who step into the magic of FPCTA. These lessons not only shaped Willem as an artist but also as a person, instilling in him a deep appreciation for collaboration and inclusivity.
Willem credits FPCTA as the perfect introduction to the world of theater for anyone wanting to take the plunge into the performing arts, providing him with foundational knowledge and invaluable experiences that shaped his career. The supportive environment at FPCTA allowed him to take creative risks, and build friendships that have lasted long beyond his time on stage as a child. It is the safety and community FPCTA provided to Willem that made him realize his passion for performing, and would be the magic that helped him realize his calling to the stage. As he made the leap to professional acting in New York City, Willem carried with him everything he learned at Fantasy, the technical skills, the sense of community, and the belief that theater can change lives. His journey from Fantasy Kid to accomplished actor is a testament to the lasting impact of community-driven, inclusive theater, and he remains an enthusiastic advocate for giving young performers the same welcoming start he received.
