Student Matinees
FPCTA is thrilled to offer daytime performances of our Mainstage Productions and Theater for Young Audiences series as a field trip destination for your school or cohort!
Student matinees are a fantastic opportunity to introduce your students to the magic of theater. Study guides are provided for each mainstage performance. Study guides include grade-appropriate activities that meet the Alabama Teaching Core Standards. These materials are sent out about 2 weeks before your selected performance date.

Field Trip reservations will open on a rolling schedule. We are accepting field trip reservation requests for The Little Mermaid (ALL GRADES) and Shakespeare in Love & War (Grades 6-12).

Recommended for Grades K-6
SYNOPSIS: In the magical GlamourSea, the HeartPearl keeps the ocean bright, clear, and protected from the polluted Boundary Waters. Pearl, the youngest daughter of Queen Neptuna, is curious about the human world above and fascinated by the strange machines humans create. When a sailor’s old bicycle is tossed into the sea, Pearl discovers a “machine of machines” and becomes determined to understand it. Granted legs for a day, Pearl must visit land to learn what the humans are doing to pollute her waters and discover how she can help them save the GlamourSea before it is too late. With courage, curiosity, science, and a whole lot of heart, this Little Mermaid proves one little step can help change the tide. A colorful mash-up of a turn-of-the-century Mobile Bay 1880s coastline and a glamorous “under the sea” 1980s prom, this new adaptation of the classic tale by Hans Christen Anderson is a pure delight!

SYNOPSIS: FPCTA is excited to offer field trips and public performances of a bold Shakespearean adventure for our older middle- and high-school audiences. Featuring our very own professional theatre company of Alabama A&M actors, Shakespeare in Love & War delivers epic love scenes and thrilling sword fights — from the moonlit balcony of Romeo and Juliet to the fiery clashes of Macbeth. Bold, passionate, and swashbuckling, this unforgettable experience is perfectly built for the classroom. Because it’s the Bard, we rate this production PG and recommend it for Grades 6-12.

Adapted especially for FPCTA and developed through workshops with our creative community, this original retelling by Fantasy Kid and local playwright Cherie Evans brings fresh imagination, warmth, and theatrical sparkle to the VBC stage for 37 years!

Recommended for Grades PreK-3
SYNOPSIS: This Fantasy Jr. approved twist on our holiday ghost story introduces younger audiences to Dickens’ timeless tale with extra heart and a little less “boo!” Performed on the beautifully transformed set of our Mainstage production at the VBC Playhouse, this story told by a smaller-cast (and puppets!) features music, dance, and comedy to make the classic ghost story a little more merry and not so scary. It’s the perfect first step into the world of Scrooge, spirits, and second chances for our youngest theatergoers.
